TotalEnergies Marine Fuels Engages Singapore’s Tertiary Students at MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024

MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024

We are delighted to be actively participating in the MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024, an annual case competition organized by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) that enables Singapore’s tertiary students to rise to key issues facing the maritime industry today.

Eager to foster, inspire and support young and future talents that will one day, join us in the maritime industry, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels along with CMA CGM, Pacific Carriers Limited, and Petredec Group have set students a few challenges - from strengthening shipping’s sustainability-related practices to improving seafarers’ well-being.

Our challenge is focused on developing a framework to deliver bio-methane in Singapore whilst avoiding additional emissions linked to physical supply, enabling shipping companies to claim carbon savings from this and fossil LNG.

The registration period is now open till 1 September. Interested students can form teams of 2-4 and register at https://www.maritimeone.sg/article-detail/maritimeone-case-summit-2024

MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024 Provides Singapore’s Tertiary Students with Opportunities to Explore Solutions to Challenges Associated with Shipping’s Transition towards Decarbonisation and with Promoting Seafarers’ Wellbeing

July 29, 2024

Participants can gain valuable opportunities to be mentored by industry veterans, strengthen credentials, and win cash prizes of up to $4,000

Singapore, 29 July 2024 —The Singapore Maritime Foundation today launched the 5th edition of the MaritimeONE Case Summit, an annual case competition that plugs Singapore’s tertiary students into challenges and issues faced by the maritime industry—a vital economic sector at the nexus of world trade and the global supply chain.

The four challenge statements this year from leading maritime multinationals range from strengthening shipping’s sustainability-related practices to improving seafarers’ well-being.

Students from Singapore’s universities and polytechnics are invited to register in teams of two to four. After shortlisting the proof-of-concept submitted by the students, sponsor companies will mentor the finalist teams through to the grand finals on 7 November 2024.

The sponsor companies this year are:

COMPANYCHALLENGE SYNOPSIS
CMA CGM Group

To develop a solution that improves existing policies and practices to better track, report and reduce Scope 3 emissions, by addressing one to two of the following areas:

  • Data collection and management
  • Collaborative frameworks for stakeholders in the supply chain
  • Sustainable procurement practices
  • Education and training programmes
Pacific Carriers LimitedTo innovate solutions that will enhance the wellbeing of navigation officers. Solutions should incorporate the use of technologies and focus on being user-friendly and people centric. Expected outcomes include enhanced operational practices on the bridge, improved fatigue management, and better operational efficiency.
Petredec GlobalTo quantify the reduction in carbon emissions arising from the substitution of biomass with LPG as a cooking fuel in the developing world through 2050, and evaluate LPG’s credentials as a transition fuel.
TotalEnergies Marine Fuels (TEMF)

To propose a robust framework that will enable:

  • TEMF to leverage on its existing LNG supply chain to deliver bio-methane produced in the region to ships in the Singapore port, while avoiding additional emissions linked to a physical supply.
  • Shipping companies to claim carbon savings from the use of such bio-methane within their carbon accounting frameworks along with the use of fossil LNG.

“The challenge statements this year provide an excellent opportunity for youths to gain an understanding into the diversity as well as complexity of issues that the industry is grappling with today. I thank the CMA CGM Group, Pacific Carriers Limited, Petredec Global and TotalEnergies Marine Fuels for providing students with such worthwhile challenges and for their exemplary commitment to nurturing the talent pool,” said Mr. Hor Weng Yew, Chairman, Singapore Maritime Foundation.

“The CMA CGM Group, a global player in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, stays committed to becoming a Net Zero Carbon company by 2050. Decarbonisation is at the heart of the Group’s strategy; we have taken concrete actions towards the reduction of our Scopes 1 and 2 emissions. Through our partnership with the MaritimeONE Case Summit, we are seeking fresh ideas from young minds to help shape a more sustainable future by tackling the complex challenge of reducing Scope 3 emissions,” said Mr. Bo Wegener, Chief Executive Officer, CMA CGM Asia Pacific.

“At PCL, our people are the cornerstone of our success. Progress and new frontiers are only possible with the right people. We place a high priority on equipping our people with the right tools and skills, and nurturing future talent. Initiatives like this will inspire young minds and provide them with an opportunity to address real-life challenges. We are confident that the creativity and fresh perspectives they bring will drive progress within our company and the industry,” said Capt. Chubasco Monteiro, Deputy CEO, Pacific Carriers Limited.

“Through the Singapore Maritime Foundation’s MaritimeONE Case Summit 2024, we look forward to engaging with the brightest young minds in the maritime sector to help solve the on and offshore need for decarbonisation. Approximately 1 gigaton of CO2 is emitted annually from burning wood fuels for cooking. This is comparable to global emissions from shipping.

LPG stands out as a low-carbon, low-polluting energy source that significantly improves air quality and cuts greenhouse gas emissions. Petredec, as the world’s leading LPG value chain organisation, is committed to expanding access to this obvious solution,” said Mr. Jonathan Fancher, Chief Executive Officer, Petredec Global.

“TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has embarked enthusiastically on the path to decarbonization, with a commitment to support shipping companies by supplying a range of innovative and low-carbon fuels. Like all great expeditions, this is a journey filled with opportunities but also challenges, as the industry charts a course through many uncertainties. As such, we are eager to foster and to inspire young and future talents that will one day, join us, and look forward to studying their fresh ideas and novel solutions,” said Ms. Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President of TotalEnergies’ Aviation and Marine Fuels Division.
